Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - March 24, 2023
Dear Friends,
I hope everyone at home in our district has had a great week! It has been another fast-paced week of activity at the General Assembly in Raleigh. I hosted several meetings this week with visitors who came for a variety of legislative advocacy days and attended committee meetings to hear new bills.
Medicaid Expansion is nearing the finish line for North Carolinians. In another historic vote this week, the House passed HB 76, after being approved by the Senate last week. It has now been sent to the Governor.
In order to protect free choice, NC may soon ban COVID vaccine requirements for public schools and universities. This ban would apply to city, county and state government employment as well.
Senate Bill 41, also known as the Repeal Pistol Purchase Permit, has been sent to Governor Cooper's desk for his signature. Governor Cooper has 10 days to consider the bill. If approved, it will become law immediately.
In other bill news, I have several bills that I have sponsored that are working their way through the Rules and Operations committee. I am especially proud of Senate Bill 343, which will help keep students and staff safer in our private schools. Read below for a short explanation from the Return America group for why they are supporting this bill.
Take a look at the Bills and Committees section below to track other bills!
Our area has strong and deep agricultural roots. There are two separate apprenticeship programs that are available for applicants who are military veterans or farmers interested in mentoring. These programs are coordinated through ApprenticeshipNC through NC Community Colleges.
A road closure in may impact your travel around. Be sure to read below for more details on the locations so you aren't unexpectedly surprised as you are out and about this weekend.
In other district news, don't forget about the Easter parade in Welcome that will take place on Saturday afternoon. The weather will be perfect for spending time outside! Consider taking a walk or enjoying a picnic in one of Davie County's beautiful parks! The Spring Fling in Mocksville is happening this Saturday at 1:00, so make a day of enjoying our area.
I am eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Easter parade in Welcome. I enjoy taking part in this tradition and I hope to see many of you as I travel along the parade route on Saturday, March 25th!
