Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - November 18, 2022

Dear Friends,

I hope everyone has had a wonderful week. We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving next week as you spend time with your families and friends!

It was my sincere pleasure to honor Mr. Russel Fuller with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest volunteer award in the State of North Carolina. It was wonderful to present to him Membership in a Society that includes people like Rev. Billy Graham, Michael Jordan, Andy Griffith, and now it includes the Mr. Russel Fuller.

It was wonderful to meet with the coordinators of SDHHDC this week and discuss all the things they do for the deaf community in Davidson County! It was an amazing opportunity to learn about issues specific to this community and how community leaders can aid them in their efforts towards a more inclusive community for the non-hearing population.

It was great to attend the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Farm City Luncheon to honor those who serve our communities through agriculture. It was a great opportunity to learn about individuals in the community that have contributed so much to agriculture. Best of all was the local grown food!

This Crash Responder Safety Week, and every week, respect our roadside heroes – EMS, fire and rescue, law enforcement, public works, towing and recovery, and transportation professionals who risk their lives to keep roads clear. Slow Down, Move Over, Stay Alert.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is inviting North Carolina communities to apply for the Paved Trails and Sidewalk Feasibility Grant program for funding to evaluate the viability and design alternatives of planned bicycle and pedestrian paths.

This Week at NCDOT REAL IDs will take effect in less than 6 months! Remember to get your new license depending on the REAL ID guidelines. Truck-Driving Simulations have been used recently to train drivers more effectively for DOT purposes.

After reporting a record-breaking month in September, NC By Train, the state’s intercity passenger rail service, again achieved a new monthly high for ridership in October.

Christmas tree growers in the North Carolina mountains are dealing with shortages and higher prices this year. For weeks now, they’ve been harvesting hundreds of thousands of trees that will be shipped up and down the east coast.

North Carolina enacted a law early in the coronavirus pandemic that gave medical providers near-absolute immunity from civil liability. Now, the nation’s largest for-profit healthcare system could use that law to squash a medical malpractice claim that has nothing to do with COVID. Some legislators say they want to revisit the law.

This year, whichever turkey President Joe Biden pardons — and its alternate — will come to Raleigh and move into their new home at North Carolina State University. It’s the first time the university will serve as the home for the National Thanksgiving Turkey.

Next week there will not be a newsletter due to the Thanksgiving holiday!

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at (919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!

Senator Steve Jarvis,
NC District 29
