Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - November 3, 2023

My wife, Wendy, and I had a wonderful time experiencing the BBQ Festival in Lexington this past Saturday. Although we've been attending for years, we still loved seeing everyone's smiles, smelling the tasty food and chatting with many of the barbecue lovers. {Contributed photo/Senator Steve Jarvis}

Dear Friends,

Just like that, we have entered the month of November! I welcome this portion of the Fall season, which often leads to more time with family and friends. I hope you are getting eager for the holiday events that are coming this month.

It's time to turn the clocks back for an hour. I can certainly appreciate feeling like I've gotten another hour of sleep. This is also a great time to change your batteries in your fire/smoke detectors around your house to keep your loved ones and property safe.

Join Davidson County's efforts and put a green light on your porch from November 6th-12th. Operation Green Light is an initiative that is intended to recognize our nation's veterans by illuminating buildings with a green light. This is meant to be a signal to show veterans that they are appreciated and supported.

The NC State Courts heard arguments from the Governor regarding several key bills that were passed this session, many by veto overrides. HB 488/SB 378 was one discussed, with a statement made from the judges this week.

Congratulations to Commissioner Chris Elliott on his selection to Board Member for the NC Association of County Commissioners. We are proud to have Chris represent district 11 and I know he will perform well in his new role with the organization.

Thomasville City Schools announced that Dr. Kennedy will be retiring from his Superintendent position, effective December 31st of this year. Dr. Kennedy has been a long-time educator who will be missed, but I wish him well as he embarks on a new life journey.

For 10 years, the Early Bird 5K Run has been held in Lexington on Thanksgiving Day. You still have a chance to register before race day for the next few weeks. The United Way benefits from your race fee. If you participate in the race, you won't feel as guilty about how large your turkey portion may be later!

The district events I am featuring this week include options to serve your community or meet your own personal goals. Consider how you can help others or yourself by reading the section below and dive in!

If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at

(919) 733-5743.

I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
