Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - October 28, 2022
We've had a week full of events, and some sad news for our community,
Former North Carolina Senator Stan Bingham, who represented Davidson and Guilford counties, died unexpectedly on Thursday morning. A native of Winston-Salem, Bingham served in the N.C. Senate from 2001 to 2017, before that, Bingham served on the Davidson County Board of Commissioners from 1990 to 1994.
After a long two years off, the Lexington Barbecue festival made its annual debut this past Saturday. It was busier than ever with vendors, music, and barbecue lovers alike.
Davidson County has a new resource to educate and inform the public on the founding documents of our government, in the form of the Charters of Freedom monument in uptown Lexington. The installation is a three-part replica of the Declaration of Independence, a portion of the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights donated by Foundation Forward.
South Davidson Family Resource Center and Denton Public Library will again share a Christmas project this year! The “Giving Tree,” which focuses on helping provide gifts for senior citizens in our community during the holiday season. Applications can be obtained at the South Davidson Family Resource Center located at 292 S. Main Street, Denton.
Denton FarmPark is presenting the 2nd Annual Fun on the Farm Festival on October 28, 29 & 30. Gates will open from 10 am-6 pm Friday and Saturday and from 1-6 pm on Sunday at 1072 Cranford Road Denton, NC.
Smoke and Oak Premium Bourbon & Cigar Lounge is the Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 Small Business of the Year Award winner! Over a very short period of time, they have become a fixture in the Community for all the right reasons and on top of all that, Courtney, April and the team are just really nice people who care about the community they live in and serve.
The Agriculture Department announced Thursday it is making available $759 million in grants and loans to enable rural communities to access high-speed internet, part of the broader $65 billion push for high-speed connectivity from last year’s infrastructure law.
A new report from State Treasurer Dale Folwell says hospitals are profiting from serving Medicare patients – the latest salvo from Folwell in his ongoing war on hospitals’ business model.
Two Schools in Senate District 29 recently received the NC GO Grant. GO Grants are $250 to $15,000 grants that will be provided to access field study locations and assist with other expenditures that result from taking students outdoors or to build outdoor classrooms. Congratulations to Friendship Elementary School and Tyro Elementary School!
