Political Opinion: From Sen. Jarvis' Desk - September 1, 2023
Dear Friends,
Happy Labor Day weekend! If you are traveling to enjoy the last bits of summer, please be safe on the roads. If you are staying in town, soak up your last summer fun. If you are able to take some time off on Monday, do something you love.
If you have connections to our coastal residents, please check on their well-being as Hurricane Idalia moves out of the area. While our district did not suffer ill effects, I know our beaches will be dealing with the storm's consequences for weeks.
The history of Labor Day goes back to the late 1800's. Labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s economic success. States celebrated labor day throughout the 1880's but Congress made the first Monday of September an official holiday in 1894.
While we are waiting to take more votes, members are still working in Raleigh on projects that we have more time to accomplish now. I have been able to meet with various health care representatives to tackle some thorny issues. I also met with other lawmakers about some important legislation we have been crafting that I know will offer some welcome changes.
On Monday night, I enjoyed speaking with the Republican Women's group of Davie County. It was a great opportunity to provide a summary of this legislative session to voters eager to hear the news. Thank you for inviting me!
In district news, the Golden LEAF Rural Initiative needs your help. This project matches up students or apprentices with companies who would like to offer internships in Davidson or Davie counties. If you would like to participate, please follow the link below to throw your company's name in the hat to provide a meaningful learning experience for a young adult or student.
The NC Wildlife Resources would like you to know that they are offering Online Hunter workshops. Before you get out in the field for opening day of turkey season, check out what you can learn ahead of time.
Sportsmen and women in our area can look forward to a popular fundraising event on Saturday, November 4th that benefits Atrium Health's Lexington Medical Foundation. Tickets are on sale now and if you buy them before September 15th, you could be a big prize winner!
Keep America Beautiful has announced that Davidson County's Keep America Beautiful branch has received an award for its efforts! Thank you so much to the volunteers in this group who strive to make Davidson County better with all of their cleaning, restoring and maintenance efforts outside.
The Christian Bluegrass Festival is coming up September 9th in Mocksville. While this event isn't on Labor Day weekend, you can buy tickets now for this not-to-miss music festival. I will remind you about attending this again in next week's newsletter.
The Libraries of Davidson County are promoting National Library Card Sign Up Month for September. Davidson County has five different branches that you can enjoy, whether you are learning to read or have been a lifelong reader!
If you have always wanted to try creating pottery, sign up for a class at Stepping Stones Pottery in Mocksville. Classes are filling up already for Ms. Gregory's 4 week sessions and I know she is eager to welcome new students to share her passion!
If you have concerns, or questions, you can reply to this newsletter, email, or call my office at
(919) 733-5743.
I also take time each day to personally call citizens in our district to listen to their concerns. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you!
