Political Opinion: From the desk of Sen. Jarvis' - January 28, 2022

Dear Friends,

I hope everyone has had a great week. The legislature has been quieter than usual this week but our great state is constantly moving.

This week Attorney General Josh Stein filed a lawsuit this week seeking billions in compensation from Articul8 and its owner. Articul8 is one of the main businesses that provide robocall scammers with the technology needed to scam and make money from innocent people. I applaud our Attorney General and his efforts, we as North Carolinians, young and old, should not tolerate scammers or robocalls anymore!

In the world of education, Superintendent Catherine Truitt has called for greater efforts to help prepare and better educate our states students and future workforce. Numerous employers are finding more and more new jobseekers are unequipped for the tasks before them. As your Senator, I believe that it is critical that we provide the tools needed for all our states students, regardless of whether they go to college or not. With so much opportunity in our state, I applaud Superintendent Truitt's efforts to provide more opportunity for those seeking vocational training.

Governor Roy Cooper has unfortunately vetoed another piece of common sense legislation. House Bill 605 would have given a less constrictive timeline for candidates looking to run for office by moving back the NC Primary Date. To see the contents of this bill, click here.

In May 2020, North Carolina passed an immunity law that shielded healthcare providers from COVID-19 lawsuits during the pandemic. Included within a broader coronavirus relief package, the provision aimed to protect companies and staff members from litigation as they battled an unprecedented, fast-spreading virus.

At the Department of Revenue, processing North Carolina tax forms will take a few weeks longer than normal this year, the NC Department of Revenue is predicting a delay of one month due to the lateness of the State Budget's passage.

Businesses have just days left to apply for $500 million in North Carolina pandemic recovery grants through a state program. About 4,300 businesses have applied so far for the grants — which may be up to $500,000 each — with the Jan. 31 application deadline quickly approaching. Click the link listed below to see if you qualify.

I hope everyone stays safe this weekend as we are expecting more snow across North Carolina! Check your weather forecast and stay off of icy roads. Black ice is a great concern this weekend so if you must drive in this weather, be cautious!

As always, thank you to our numerous constituents who continue to write, call, or email our office.

Senator Steve Jarvis,
NC District 29
