Suspects apprehended in multi-county home invasions and break-ins

On August 26th, Sheriff R.T. Simmons held a press conference announcing the arrest of multiple suspects that have been involved with numerous break-ins and home invasions spreading across multiple counties, including Davidson County.

Since December 2023 Detectives with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office T.R.A.C.E. Team began investigating these incidents and identifying suspects linking all of the additional counties. The initial investigation and identification of suspects and vehicles began in Davidson County.Numerous saturation patrols were conducted where Detectives were able to gather information on potential suspects.

In early August Detectives attempted to stop a suspect vehicle in the area of Hwy 150 and Friendship Church Road which fled from Detectives into Forsyth County. With the assistance of Winston Salem Police Department Detectives located and seized the suspect vehicle under the “Run Your Done” law.

North Carolina's "Run and You're Done" law, also known as speeding to elude arrest, was passed in 2011 to make it illegal to flee from the police to prevent them from doing their job. The law can result in serious criminal consequences, including the seizure and forfeiture of the driver's vehicle.

The law states that it's a crime to speed while trying to elude or prevent law enforcement from doing their job.

This includes operating a motor vehicle while fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer while they are lawfully performing their duties.

The offense is considered a Class 1 misdemeanor, but it can become a Class H felony if certain aggravating factors are present. These factors include:

  • Driving more than 15 mph above the speed limit

  • Having a revoked driver's license at the time of the incident

If the offense occurs while committing another crime, the driver may face additional charges.

Detectives continued to collaborate with other agencies to include:

  • Winston Salem Police Department

  • Surry County Sheriff’s Office

  • Stokes County Sheriff’s Office

  • Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office

  • Davie County Sheriff’s Office

  • Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office.

These agencies shared information about the potential suspect’s modus operandi to include the suspects forcibly kicking doors and stealing precious metals, jewelry, coins, cash and firearms.

Suspects were identified and with the assistance of the Winston Salem Police Departments Violent Crime Apprehension Team/SWAT Team and the United Stated Marshals Service located and arrested:

  • Tavarus Rhynes

  • Jowaun Sansbury

  • Harvey Williams

  • Shanara Allen

  • Michael Horne Jr.

All of those arrested are from Winston Salem. During the course of the investigation, Detectives have discovered over 95 break-ins/home invasions that has occurred over multiple counties to include, Davidson County, Yadkin County, Stokes County, Davie County, Rockingham County, Forsyth County and the City of Madison.

Detectives have issued over 300 total charges between all of the agencies and have recovered numerous pieces of stolen property that includes jewelry and collectible coins.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office has currently filed the below listed charges for each suspect. Additional charges are anticipated as the result of the investigation as it is ongoing.
