It all started with a conversation. Sedley Abercrombie is a librarian and branch manager with the Davidson County Public Library (DCPL) system. During a chat she was having at Goose and the Monkey Brewhouse (GMBH), one of the bartenders was made aware of her profession. From there, Books & Brews was born.

This collaboration between the DCPL and GMBH will combine two loves that are common for many: books and beer. On Monday, April 5, Books & Brews will meet at GMBH at 6 p.m. The unique book club will meet every first Monday of the month at the same time and location.

Abercrombie is excited to bring this option to the community.

“Librarians are known for doing outreach programs, meaning they bring the library to you,” Abercrombie explained. “I had read about other successful book clubs in bars and thought that the Goose and Monkey would make a really cool venue for such a program. Plus, what is cooler than a book club with beer?”

The first book the club will read is “The Woman in the Window” by A. J. Finn. It’s a crime thriller full of suspense! Books will be provided by the DCPL in physical and online forms that can be checked out using one’s library card. If you don’t have a card, don’t worry. Staff will be on hand to register new patrons and issue replacement cards. Remember, April 5-10 is National Library Week. As part of the celebration, the replacement card fee will be waived.

At the initial meeting, a meet and greet will take place. Books will be distributed and participants will play a game of bingo.

“Library staff from across the county will be on hand to help facilitate,” Abercrombie confirmed. “We have will have some conversation starters, a get-to-know-you bingo game and door prizes. Oh, and lots of DCPL swag!”

Discussion of April’s book will take place at the May meeting. Participants will also be able to pick up a copy of the next book.

For more information, call the DCPL at (336) 242-2040. GMBH is located at 401 S. Railroad St., Lexington.
