TCS unrestricted fund balance deficit improves, board hears results of audit

Thomasville City Schools (TCS) held their monthly board of education meeting Tuesday, October 5. Shannon Dennison from the certified public accounting firm Anderson, Smith, Wike presented an overview of their audit of the school system. The audit, which covered July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021 can be found here.

During her presentation, Dennison noted that TCS has had a history of deficiency in unrestricted funds. However, the system has taken steps to improve in this area. Two years ago, TCS had a deficient of over $900,000. Last year, it was over $660,000. This past year, it stood at $33,000.

Dennison stated, “You are making significant process in becoming profitable in local funds. You want to be able to retain programs when COVID funding runs out in 2024.” Nothing unusual or unexpected was found in the audit, according to Dennison.

Superintendent Dr. Catherine Gentry recognized the system’s four principals for Principal’s Appreciation Month. Collin Tribby (Thomasville Primary School), Jennifer Tallant (Liberty Drive Elementary School), Kevin Leake (Thomasville Middle School) and Megan Silvey (Thomasville High School) were presented gift bags and met with a round of applause.

Krystal Sanders, director of human resources, shared with the board October’s Bulldog Nation award winners. The purpose of the award is to recognize employees or stakeholders who consistently meet or exceed standards and inspire others. The nominations are evaluated on the four Bulldog Nation pillars: Diversity, Pride, Unity and Excellence. This month’s recipients are Kabria Hines(TPS) and Cliff Thompson (THS).

A United Way of Davidson County campaign was also provided by Sanders. The school system has already raised more funds than last year for United Way. Before the campaign, Gentry told staff she would match whatever total was collected through the coin jars challenge at each school. Gentry made a $900 donation. TCS will have a food truck rodeo (at THS) and silent auction on Friday, October 15.

Chief Learning and Accountability Officer, Andrew Weiner, presented an update on the TCS strategic plan. The four principals shared their school improvement plans.

The board voted to approve:

  • the 2021-22 Behavioral Consultant contract with Tricia Gladstone

  • the price quote for staff laptops

  • 2021-22 Qualified Observer list

  • a request to table the policy regarding public participation at school board meetings

    • Sanders noted that changes had been suggested to provide additional options for the public to share their thoughts with board members besides attending meetings in person; a virtual option is being added

  • request to waive customary wait time and approve wearing face coverings policy

Documents presented at the meeting can be found here.
