Langston Event: Grab something cute and a ticket

Langston Event: Grab something cute and a ticket

Organizers have sold more than 50 tickets for this historic event…but still have room for more! Tickets are online at Uptown Lexington until Thursday, March 24th.

The menu created for the Inaugural Black Butterfly event is inspired by many traditional favorite dishes in the African American community. The menu is an homage to the heritage of certain foods like okra, black-eyed peas and crispy fried chicken. “I reimagined many of these staples and developed a menu that granted a modern twist. A menu that is elegant yet still very satisfying,” said culinary artist and Black Butterfly Network organizer Clarence Vernon Hargrave. “I mean, the Collard Green Spring Rolls alone are a reason to attend Lexington With Love!”

From Langston to Lexington with Love say, “It’s all about the art!” In fact, everything from the menu to the walls will be inspired by artists. The event is co-hosted by Anything for Our Youth, Event Horizons and Davidson Local. All proceeds will support event expenses and opportunities for local artists.

How does famous Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes correlate with Lexington?  Hughes was a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance, a flourishing era of intellectual, literary, and artistic life that took place in the 1920s in a number of cities, most notably Harlem.

The handy work of two local historians Charles Owens and Zane Matthews has revealed that Langston Hughes has ties to Davidson County through former businessman and entrepreneur Baxter McCrary.

On Friday, March 25th, 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm at 119 West 3rd Avenue Lexington, NC, a Black Tie affair will honor his legacy by bringing a little bit of Hughes to Lexington. Black Tie is requested but NOT required. Tickets are available online and at Uptown Lexington at 13 E 1st Ave, Lexington, NC 27292.

Donation requests of $50 per person will support future business, arts and cultural events in Davidson County. This will cover the cost of heavy hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, live music, art exhibits, networking and more. All are welcome.

From Langston to Lexington with Love is a Black Cultural Art event to celebrate Black History Month. During the event, the Black Butterfly Network will introduce a new concept to all attendees and announce future events. Organizers Tina Royal (Anything for Our Youth Group, Inc), Antionette Kerr (Davidson Local) and Clarence Vernon Hargrave (Event Horizon) recognize that The Harlem Renaissance was a golden age for African American artists, writers and musicians.

They envision a similar revival happening locally and plan to use the evening to announce a networking opportunity similar to one that historically gave artists pride and control over how the Black experience was represented in American culture and set the stage for the civil rights movement. Each of the organizations work together to promote, and support small nonprofits and small businesses, entrepreneurship, unity and cultural events within Davidson County.

The event will honor the legacy of the late Langston Hughes and present local artists to attendees. Fine Artwork will be available for viewing and purchase. Participating artists include Lynn Marshall-Linnemeier, - mixed media; James Littlejohn - performin arts, Kenrick Jobe - paint & drawings, -NaTavea Hargrave,  - Photography, Ken Davis - live music and CDs.

“We want to recognize the spirit of the city renaissance and those who have gone before us,” Kerr said. “Langtson Hughes represents a style of art that is distinctly African American, and iconic for all. Davidson County has hidden gems of cultural art and intellect that we want to help usher in a thriving network of support.”
