The Wilkerson Family honored by Civitan District

Robert, Lori and Stephanie Wilkerson of Davidson County were honored as the 2021-22 Distinguished Civitan Family by North Carolina District West Civitan.
Criteria for the family award include activities in Civitan, church and community. The district also presented Stephanie Wilkerson with The Honor Key Award for 2022. She served as the growth and retention chair this past year for the district and earned the outstanding cabinet member award. In May she had received the
Area Distinguished Civitan Award from the clubs of Davidson County. The district awards were presented during the 57 th annual convention held August 12-14 in Hickory. North Carolina District West Civitan covers 46 western counties.
The Wilkerson’s are members and leaders of the Davidson County Civitan Club. Stephanie served as club president in 2018-19 being mentored by her mother, Lori. Their club nominated the family for the award and submitted letters of support from many of the organizations the family represents.
The family traveled throughout the district attending many meetings and visiting clubs promoting Civitan. Stephanie has personally sponsored 20 members to Civitan in eight years.
In addition, Stephanie is a Global Messenger for Special Olympics trained to speak on behalf of the organization. Stephanie is an athlete representative for the
Law Enforcement Torch Run of Special Olympics that often takes the family throughout the state from the mountains to the coast. Stephanie has spoken at dozens events including LETR conferences, Polar
Plunges, multiple Torch Relays, Plane Pull, Over-the-Edge, Truck Convoy and other events from Cherokee to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The family has been in the cold water, on top of 30-story tall buildings. Stephanie gave a speech on the North Carolina Capital Lawn with the Governor of North Carolina on behalf of Special Olympics.
Stephanie’s Special Olympics athletic participation includes equestrian, cheerleading and team softball. Lori Wilkerson and her daughter has been a unified doubles pair in tennis.
Stephanie’s Stampeders is a multi-member walking team that has raised tens of thousands of dollars for an annual Juvenile Diabetes Relief Walk.
In support of Victory Junction Camp Stephanie recently made 265 heart magnets, packed 260 swag bags and made a video for the Kyle Petty Motorcycle Ride. She is an alumnus of the camp and an Ambassador making speeches and giving guided tours for new sponsors.
The Wilkerson family initiated and leads a club and district effort collecting soda can tabs to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-Salem.
The family was previously fully involved with activities at LifePoint Church in Lexington and now the same at Mt. Pleasant Church in Thomasville.
The Civitan International mission worldwide is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. The organization has tagged itself as ‘Champions of service.’
The Davidson County Civitan Club was chartered September 24, 2002 and will celebrate its 20 th anniversary next month. The club currently has 57 members.
