Thomasville’s first Therapy Dog "Doc" gets badge and honor

At a recent Thomasville Rotary Club meeting, something a little pawsitively special happened.
City Manager Michael Brandt presented a shiny new badge—not to a human hero, but to the town’s four-legged trailblazer, Doc, Thomasville Fire & Rescue’s very first therapy dog. Alongside Doc stood Battalion Chief Richard Waddell, his primary handler, proudly accepting the recognition on behalf of his loyal companion.
The badge, which gleamed with meaning far beyond the metal, was the brainchild of Manager Brandt, who months ago floated the idea of crafting official badges for the hardworking K9s serving the Thomasville Police Department. As fate would have it, the city’s newest recruit—Doc—had just joined the ranks at Fire & Rescue, making the timing perfect for him to receive one of his own.
Doc's journey is nothing short of remarkable. From rescue pup to public servant, he now serves as a soothing presence for first responders and community members alike. Whether it’s helping firefighters decompress after high-stress calls or comforting families during tough times, Doc brings warmth where it’s needed most.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Mrs. Heather Lewis, owner of Avis Jewelers of Thomasville, who generously donated Doc’s badge. It’s one more example of how our community shows up for one another—fur, fun, or fire gear.

Doc, badge and all, is officially reporting for duty.
