Underworld talent takes center stage
Saturday, July 24 at Breeden Amphitheater
Underworld Music Group organizers Byron “Mr. Might” McIntosh-Bey, Marlo “Uptown” Moses and Adrian “Supreme” McClelland have been working with shows across the state. Now, the Lexington Senior High alumni are setting the stage for an artist talent competition close to their Uptown roots. On Saturday, July 24, the group will present the first “I Got It” showcase from 1 to 10 p.m. at Breeden Amphitheater on 333 South Main Street in Lexington, North Carolina.
The group selected the amphitheater as a kid-friendly venue due to its size and proximity to Uptown. Organizers say that helping local artists build confidence is essential to a thriving community. “It’s a bigger stage, broader audience. It’s in the middle of the city but we still have to bring the city to the people,” McIntosh-Bey explained.
“We want to introduce arts to our youth,” Moses said. “Anything could be art. Come and show your talent.”
Confirmed performances include: Rapper and artist Darius D-Money; CJ “Chappo” Woodberry, Rapper; Lady Leash, Rapper; Almijah “Mijah” McIntosh, Singer and Justin McMillan “Blaylock Exsel.” Artists should register and by July 14 with DJ Shaadthedj@gmail.com.
The event will include food vendors as well as professional entertainment. The menu will include fish, hamburgers, chicken and beef hotdogs. Food will be available for purchase. No outside food, alcohol or coolers are permitted.
Tickets for general admission are $10. Artists will not be charged a fee to enter the competition but must preregister for their performance with DJ Shaadthedj@gmail.com
Winners will receive trophies and a special feature in Davidson Local. The group initially planned an entry fee for competitions similar to events in Greensboro and Winston-Salem but decided to drop the fee as well as the cash prize. “A lot of people are scared to put money back into yourself,” McIntosh-Bey lamented. Winners will be determined by audience applause similar to New York based variety television hit Show Time at the Apollo.
“It’s for the community,” said McClelland. “The main reason is for bringing the community together and broadcast the talent, if you got it. Then bring it.”
