Will Election Day voting also trend upward?

Will Election Day voting also trend upward?

Candidates and elections officials anticipate larger than typical numbers at precincts today.

"Early voting numbers were up at the Board of Elections office. Typically for municipal elections during early voting our office averages about 315 voters throughout the entire cycle. This year at our office, we had 1,169 voters. Our Thomasville location was pretty consistent from what we have seen historically from that location for a municipal election. Thomasville library had 617 voters this year," said Andrew Richards, Davidson County BOE director.

"With our office being a higher turnout than we have seen for a municipal election, all the wards in Lexington were up as far as turnout compared to historically for municipal elections. We are preparing for busy days for our Lexington City precincts and our Thomasville precincts."

The city of Lexington is the only ward-based voting system remaining in Davidson County. Wards leading in polling numbers are different from years past.

Totals at the close of early voting:

Ward 1 252

Ward 2 112

Ward 3 123

Ward 4 174

Ward 5 232

Ward 6 238

Richards said we must continue to remind voters about ID requirements. "Voters will have to show a photo ID when they come to vote this year. If a voter does not have a voter ID, they can still vote using a provisional ballot and either fill out a reasonable impediment form for not having a photo ID or they can bring their photo ID to the Board of Elections after Election Day and before 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2023," Richards said. "Due to state law, we are unable to produce the Voter ID cards from our office on Election Day. The next day we are allowed by law to issue Voter ID cards will be Wednesday, November 8, 2023."

Garrett Holloway councilperson for Ward 5 is running unopposed this term. He commented, “If early voting is any indication, it appears a lot of people in Lexington are engaged and excited to make their voices heard. I was very pleased to see the number of citizens in Lexington who came out to make their voices heard in early voting. Exercise the right to vote so many people fought and died for. Citizens from all backgrounds want to come out and cast a ballot for their candidates of choice. Hopefully tomorrow we can expect the same turnout. Early voting was great! We are looking forward to another good turnout on Election Day."
