Winegar awarded NC Bus Driver of the Year Award
Lexington, NC – Rita Winegar, Route Bus Driver for Davidson County Transportation System (DCTS) was awarded the North Carolina Bus Driver of the Year Award for Community Transportation Systems from the North Carolina Public Transportation Association (NCPTA). The award was presented to Ms. Winegar by Richard Jones, Transportation Director and the Staff on Friday, March 25, 2022.
David Rhew, Executive Director of The North Carolina Public Transportation Association (NCPTA) announced the award at the annual NCPTA Conference Awards luncheon. NCPT is a private, non-profit organization that was incorporated in January 1983. NCPTA represents 92 public transportation providers. This diverse group of System Members comprises large market urban transit systems operating light rail vehicles and large buses to the smaller market rural transit systems operating just a few vans.
Regardless of size, the public transportation service provided is an integral part of the overall transportation infrastructure in those communities served and is vital to maintaining the economic mobility, freedom of travel, and quality of life for the citizens and visitors alike.
Ms. Winegar was recognized for her outstanding service to the community. She regularly hands out backpacks with personal necessities and blankets to the homeless. At Thanksgiving, she delivered home cooked thanksgiving meals to the folks who regularly ride with her that may not necessarily had access to one or a family to share the holiday.
Wonnette Sparks, Route Supervisor stated: “We are glad that she was chosen for the award. She definitely deserves the award and regularly goes beyond the expectations in serving our citizens. I am very proud of her.”
Richard Jones, Transportation Director stated: “We are very proud of Rita and how well she cares for the riders. She definitely deserves the recognition. I love how Rita refers to her riders as ‘precious cargo.’” We are blessed to work with a great group of people who love to serve the citizens of Davidson County.”
