Thomasville photographer Matthew Lewis Jr. remembered on The Today Show

Recently featured on the Today Show, Thomasville the “Yesterday” segment highlights Matthew Lewis Jr., a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer known for capturing some of history's most iconic figures, including Martin Luther King Jr., Muhammad Ali, and John Lennon.

As a trailblazer in photojournalism, Lewis Jr. shared his extraordinary talent with the world, leaving behind a legacy of powerful storytelling through his imagery. Despite photographing many of the world’s most famous faces, his heart and home remained in Thomasville, NC, where he peacefully passed away at the age of 94 on October 2, 2024.

We honor his extraordinary life and contributions to the arts. His work continues to inspire, and his deep connection to our community is a source of pride for all of Thomasville.
