Davidson-Davie moves to virtual learning through January
Starting today, January 14, Davidson-Davie Community College will transition to virtual learning for most classes through Sunday, January 30. Most labs will continue in-person.
Students, faculty and administration received communications from Darrin L. Hartness, Ed.D., President of Davidson-Davie Community College and senior leadership on January 13th.
“Mirroring the situation we see in our local communities, nationally, and around the globe, we are seeing rising COVID case counts on campus. While we hope that most of these cases are mild and that our students and employees are vaccinated and boosted to protect themselves against serious illness, these rising cases are affecting our ability to staff classes and offices,” Hartness wrote in a statement. “Many students are also absent from classes, and instructors are working diligently to manage missed or remote work by students. Although we believe that most cases originate outside the classroom environment (home, work, in the community), we want to do all we can to prevent the more-contagious Omicron variant from spreading among our campus community.”
Hartness says the college was able to adjust quickly. “We’ve been in this place before,” Hartness said. “Our students and faculty are flexible.” Instructors have already been in communication regarding specific class arrangements. Faculty will teach remotely in most cases and be on campus as needed, primarily for labs and clinicals. Most staff will transition to a staggered work arrangement in coordination with their supervisors.”
The staggered schedule models one that was in place until August 2021. Hartness complimented the faculty and instructors for their “dedication to keeping our offices staffed and to providing a high level of customer service when working remotely.”
The Child Development Center is not affected by this announcement. Hartness said, “Any changes at the CDC will continue to be communicated directly to parents. This plan will be in effect until January 30 and only extended if conditions warrant it.”
