Panel to discuss local historic African-American neighborhoods

A panel will gather at 202 N. Main Street in Uptown Lexington on Monday, June 17th at 6:00 p.m. to discuss the historical significance of numerous African-American neighborhoods in Davidson County. Traditionally neighborhoods are considered historic after existing for 50 years.

The discussion will feature a moderator and guest speakers, followed by a public question and answer session.

The event is a collaboration between a team of individuals and organizations with the Davidson County Historical Museum also lending support. Local Historian, Tonya Lanier and Caitlin Williams-Cole, Curator of the Davidson County Historical Museum, will be co-moderating the panel discussion. Davidson Local Publisher, Antionette Kerr also participated in the panel planning which includes Davidson Local as the official media sponsor.

The discussion will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the discussion questions concentrating on sharing the community’s social history, physical description, origin story, culture, progress and significant events.

As moderators ask questions, the panelists will pass a microphone around to those who would like to answer. Attendees will also participate by adding their input.

There are a number of neighborhoods that will be discussed by the panel including:

  • Washington Park

  • Lincoln Park

  • South Side Village

  • Raleigh Road
