First Reformed UCC is an Open and Affirming (ONA) congregation in the United Church of Christ. This designation signifies that the church seeks to be an inclusive and safe place for all to worship, particularly the LGBTQ community and their families.

In 2017, First Reformed entered an intentional and rigorous 18 months process of discussion, prayer, and discernment to determine if they needed to label themselves as ONA.

Questions and comments arose like:

We say “All are welcome,” isn’t that enough?”

“We try to be friendly to everyone. Why should we make a statement saying we welcome persons no matter who they are?

Is it really necessary to be Open and Affirming?”

These questions were valid and needed to be answered. Most churches describe themselves as friendly and welcoming. Why was there a need to specifically identify? After having discussions with local folks in the LGBTQ community, recurrent themes emerged. Brave souls shared stories of the pain they felt inchurches who did not accept them or their family members.

Tragically, the message often translates to, “if the church doesn’t accept me, then God must not either.”

Stories of deep rejection, depression, and even attempted suicide. Hearing how churches had caused such devastating pain was a transformational moment for First Reformed, and shortly after the congregation voted upon this Welcoming Statement.
