Salute: DAR event to honor American Revolution veterans

The Leonard’s Creek Chapter of National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution will sponsor a Wreaths Across America event on this Saturday, December 18 at noon.

Highlights are below. Please join us!

  • Location is Pilgrim Reformed Church historic cemetery, 797 Pilgrim Church Road, Lexington

  • We will remember over 100 deceased veterans dating back to the American Revolution by placing fresh green honor wreaths from Wreaths Across America on their gravesites

  • Local veterans representing branches of the US military will place ceremonial wreaths to recognize those branches; A POW/MIA wreath will be placed by a local woman whose brother was shot down over Vietnam and MIA.

  • Taps will be played by Steve Sutton. See bio below.

  • Fred Learned, a member of Sons of the American Revolution will be present in his Revolutionary War uniform and will carry a Betsy Ross flag.

  • Veterans are encouraged to attend, be recognized and assist in the placement of wreaths.

  • The event is open to the public, who is also invited to participate in wreath laying

STEVE SUTTON, trumpet

Steve Sutton is the E-flat Soprano Cornet of the North Carolina Brass Band, Principal Trumpet of the Piedmont Wind Symphony, and Head Music Instructor of the Academy of Music and Arts of the Salvation Army. Steve received his Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is an organization with a deeply rich history while also being truly relevant in today’s world. More than 1,000,000 women have joined the organization since it was founded over 125 years ago. They became members to honor their heritage as well as make a difference in their communities across the country and the world. Learn more about the amazing history of the DAR and what members are doing today to continue that legacy. DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join. https://www.dar.org

Wreaths Across America:

Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 2,500 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.
