Thomasville Multicultural Committee sponsors vigil

The Thomasville Multicultural committee will sponsor a COMMUNITY CANDLELIGHT VIGIL on Saturday, March 19th at 6:00 pm hosted by Sechrest Davis Funeral Home at 18 Randolph St., Thomasville, N.C. (beside the library).

Event will be held outside on the lawn weather permitting. A rain date will be announced.

FREE candles will be provided for residents to join in unison and on one accord to stand in memory of their loved ones.  A diverse group of faith-based representatives will be present to share expressions of their cultural and burial customs.

The Committee elected to host at Sechrest Davis because of their ongoing community engagement efforts such the Fire & Rescue Fire Safety Week, 9-11 Memorial, and their own candlelight services held for their families annually.  The Multicultural Committee's goals are to create an atmosphere of peace and unity; promote community understanding and respect for different nationalities and cultures; and to advocate for different cultural values found in the community.

“Deaths from COVID-19 reached 20,000 people in North Carolina in January, a dark benchmark in the ongoing pandemic.  The milestone comes less than a year after the state hit the 10,000 mark, which happened in February.North Carolina's death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic hits 20,000

This event is for everyone that has been caught in a state-of-shock or traumatic experience of the sudden loss of their loved ones.   Many have not been able to properly grieve with their community of friends, family, and colleagues.

“Families whose loved ones die during the COVID-19 pandemic face unprecedented restrictions and challenges. To not say goodbye to loved ones, to not have loved ones attend funeral services, or to not even find a permanent resting place for a loved one is changing how people grieve.“ COVID-19 Changes Funerals and How Families Grieve

This event is also an effort to increase visibility in the city of the Multicultural Committee that was established in 2012.  Meetings are open to the public every first Wednesday of the month at 7pm.   Residents of any culture and background are welcomed to attend or participate.

Email the committee at tvillemulticultural@hotmail.com if you have any questions.
