31 years ago, a group of community leaders led by Dr. James F. Slyman determined Davidson County would benefit from a volunteer based free clinic for the uninsured. Slyman’s work as an ophthalmologist at Lexington Memorial Hospital let him see first hand the lack of access to care for low-income, uninsured people, along with his volunteer work at Crisis Ministries homeless shelter.
On February 22, 1992, Davidson Medical Ministries (DMM) doors opened to serve the health care needs of the uninsured under 200% poverty level in Davidson County. 30 years later, DMM is still serving the uninsured, low-income in both Lexington and Thomasville clinics. By year’s end, there will also be a mobile clinic to serve the outlying parts of the county. Without the vision of one such person, DMM may well not be here.
Slyman was surprised with The Don Lucey Award, which honors ones work in free and charitable clinics across NC, on February 22, 2022. The doctor currently works at Davidson Eye Associates.
