St. Stephen United Methodist Church unveiled their new, historical marker on Sunday afternoon, July 23 after morning service. Lewis Michael, 99, was bestowed the honor of pulling the sheet off of the sign. Michael is a lifelong member and is the second oldest parishioner of the church. His sister, Etta White, is the oldest at 108 years old.

Occupying the oldest extant African-American sanctuary of any denomination in Lexington, St. Stephen UMC was added to the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 2021. The church is located at 102 E. 1st St.

A video of the unveiling can be found on our Facebook page.
