BOE board chair and director discuss incorrect filing period

BOE board chair and director discuss incorrect filing period

On Tuesday, August 17, the Davidson County Board of Elections (BOE) had their first meeting with their newly appointed board. Members include J. Calvin Cunningham (Chairperson), Iley Belinda Clark, Kathy Davis Wall, Chad Cameron Freeman, and Richard (Dick) Johnson.

Clark was nominated and approved as secretary. The board decided to postpone the appointment of precinct officials and the securement of the Lexington Precinct Four- Ward Five voting location until they can do more research. They also decided to continue the same one-stop voting process utilized in the last municipal elections by to open voting locations in Thomasville and Lexington.

After the meeting, Calvin Cunningham and Ruth Honeycutt addressed the controversy surrounding the filing dates for the Lexington Municipal elections. Last week, it was posted on the Davidson County BOE website that the filing period was from July 26 until August 13.

Cunningham was notified on Friday, August 13 of the discrepancy by the county attorney who contacted the state board. Honeycutt stated that she had already changed the dates for the filing period on the website before the state called. During this conversation, it was noted that the Lexington City Board of Education elections will be during the 2022 general elections on March 8.

An email from the Associate General Counsel to the North Carolina Board of Elections stated that if the Lexington districts were revised by November 17, then the filing period will begin on December 6  at 12:00 p.m. It would end at 12:00 p.m. on December 17. If the districts aren’t revised by November 17, they must be sent in by December 17, and the filing period will be held January 3 at 12:00 p.m. until 12:00 p.m. on January 7.
