Cathy's Creative Corner: 3T - T.I.M., Trey, Thomas (Day Thomas)
This is the last short story in the 3T series.
“Nice to have you join us today, Mr. Thomas,” was the greeting I received from Mr. Valdez as I entered the classroom. I just barely slid past the door and frame before he slammed it shut. That’s one of the things I actually liked about this school, punctuality. If I hadn’t made it in time, I would’ve missed my favorite class. Unless you have an excuse about a doctor’s appointment, you won’t be allowed in just because you’re late.
“Sorry, I was almost tardy, Mr. Valdez. But this beautiful weather affected my walk. It slowed me down. Did you notice how nice it is out there this morning?” I flashed my most sincere smile at him to smooth things over.
“Yes, Mr. Thomas, I did. Now, everyone get out your blueprints and let’s hear about your projects. This time I’ll start at the bottom of the roster. That makes you first, Mr. Zimmerman.” One of the other aspects I like about this school is that it exudes respect. Of course, we call the teachers Mr., Mrs. or Ms. In return, the students are addressed by their last names proceeded by Mr. or Ms. If there happens to be several with the same last name, they are addressed by first initial and last name. I thought it was corny when I first came here but the practice has grown on me. I can say it even makes me feel some kind of way when the teacher asks “Mr. Thomas” for his opinion or thoughts.
I had never considered going to another school until a former counselor recommended it to my parents. She said I would be more challenged by STEM classes being taught at a nearby magnet school. Math has always been my favorite subject and I love building things. When I read that some of their specialized courses were Math, Design and Technology and Information and Communications Technology, I was sold! I knew I would probably never miss another day of school! Better yet, we didn’t have to move so I’d still be close to my neighborhood friends. Of course, I’ll make more at the new school but ain’t nothing like your homies you grew up with.
Unexpectedly, there was a knock at the door. In walks the guidance counselor with a new student in tow. Well, well, well, who do we have here? She’s lovely. I think I’ve seen her before. Although dressed in our school protocol, her up-do braids help define her personality. “Good morning, class. I’d like to introduce Ms. Amanda Shivers,” announces the counselor. “Her family recently moved here from the big city of Brooklyn, New York. Be on your best behavior and make her feel welcomed.”
“Mr. Thomas, would you mind moving into the desk behind you?” asked Mr. Valdez. “It’s the only empty one in the classroom and I’d hate to have Ms. Shivers hidden behind you. You’re a tall guy.”
“I sure will, sir. No problem.” It was just a matter of rolling up my blueprint and hanging my backpack on the back of the new desk. I could feel the envy from all the other guys knowing I would be the first to strike up a conversation with the new girl.
“Thank you,” smiled Ms. Shivers as she approached. I swear I’ve seen this girl before! NOW I remember! She came to the park with Carla when I was balling. “Fought your way out of any paper bags lately?” She giggled. Oh no! That was her on the other side of the aisle at the grocery store, too!
“Wow. Small world.” I laughed.
“So, what’s your name? T.I.M. or Trey or Thomas?”
“My name is Timothy Thomas III. Homies call me T.I.M. My family calls me Trey, for the third. And here at school, I’m Thomas, Mr. Thomas. You decide what you wanna call me.”
She ponders, “How ‘bout I call you 3T? That seems to sum up them all. By the way, everyone calls me Mandy.”
