City of Lexington hires diversity, equity and inclusion officer

LEXINGTON HIRES DEI ENGAGEMENT MANAGER 

LEXINGTON, NC – Dr. Patricia R. Smyre has been appointed to fulfill an important role as  the first dedicated Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Officer for the City of Lexington. Earlier this year, Lexington City Council voted to hire a full-time employee dedicated to  diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Patricia Smyre’s first official day is Monday, October 25. 

Dr. Smyre is a motivational and inspiring coach, educator, public speaker, and facilitator for  positive change. She has over 30 years of leadership experience in various organizations, currently serving in a DEI professional capacity for Gaston College.  

Dr. Smyre earned a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from North Carolina Agricultural and  Technical University, a MA in Professional Counseling from Liberty University, and a BS in  Business Administration from the University North Carolina Greensboro.

When asked why she chose Lexington, Dr. Smyre replied, “Lexington is on the verge of  becoming a progressive, positive influence for the Triad. We have the opportunity to fine-tune  the small details to help us soar. My job is to fine-tune so that Lexington can soar.”
