Crooks Shoe Shop owner passes

Shawnna Gladney, granddaughter of Crooks Shoe Shop owner Tony Skeen, contacted Davidson Local in an effort to inform the community of Skeen’s passing. Gladney shared with us some background information about Skeen and his funeral arrangements. An article about his legacy will be published at a later date.

Tony Llyvon Skeen was born on January 13, 1948, in Thomasville, North Carolina. On January 19, 2023, after 75 years, his earthly life came to a close beginning his eternal chapter.

He was born and raised in Thomasville, NC, where he received his formal education at Church Street School. During his final years of high school, he began to explore and develop skills as a cobbler.

Tony was lovingly referred to as Dad, Pops, and most of all, “The Shoeman”. For over 25 years, he owned and operated Crooks Shoe Shop in Lexington, NC. As the Master Craftsman, he repaired and restored shoes, belts, bags, and so much more. He developed a personal rapport with customers & neighboring business owners and remained committed to serving members of the greater Triad area as long as God allowed him to.

Final arrangements are being hosted by S.E. Thomas Funeral Home. A public visitation will take place on Wednesday, January 25 from 1-6pm at 110 Highland Avenue, Thomasville, NC.

His celebration of life will occur at 11:30 am on Thursday, January 26 at Maranatha Fellowship Church (1215 Eastchester Drive, High Point, NC)

The family would like to thank all of his customers for allowing him to share his craft with you and for giving him an opportunity to live out his passion daily. We are grateful to all members of the Lexington community for supporting him with your various acts of kindness!
