Fair week reigns: Jordan Truesdale brings home the crown

The uproar for fair queen rivals any spectator sport. From creative chants to cowboy boots and matching attire, the contest continues to boost the spirits of all involved. Tickets are limited by school selection and it’s standing room only for the crowning festivities.

Ticket sales and proceeds from each fair support Kamp Kiwanis and the YMCA summer day camp. According to members, more than 1000 youth are served though this partnership. Kamp Kiwanis hosts the YMCA summer day camp experience in a rustic setting for local children in eleven weekly sessions.

Lexington Senior High School student Jordan Truesdale was crowned queen last night. She is the daughter of Tracy Crowell and William Truesdale. According to spectators, a Yellow Jacket hasn't taken home the Kiwanis Fair Queen title for more than 20 years. Longtime Master of Ceremonies, Irvin Sink asked the contestant to speak about a meaningful experience. Truesdale shared her Governor's School experience and how she works with a local women's shelter. Additionally, she shared her experience studying social science, noting that her Governor's School’s summer was "life changing."

Her grandmother, Donna Black, a former United Way executive director and executive director of Communities in Schools played a part in influencing Jordan to take an active role in advocacy. Truesdale hopes to attend University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill next year and continue advocating for children and families. She’s anxiously awaiting an acceptance letter from the nation’s oldest public university.
