Davidson County Local Food Network connects consumers with local foods and farms through Piedmont Fresh
[Thomasville] - Last October, in a testament to their commitment, five farms and food businesses partnered with the Davidson County Local Food Network to launch the Piedmont Fresh food hub program, an online farmers market that empowers consumers to conveniently access local foods.
Piedmont Fresh bridges the gap for individuals unable to attend farmers markets on Saturdays and for farmers who cannot participate in weekday markets due to time constraints. Many of our young farmers work full-time outside of the farm. This innovative program provides an additional revenue opportunity and confidence for farmers to commit to farming full-time and for residents to access local food.
"Our partnership with local farms in launching the Piedmont Fresh food hub program has been a testament to their commitment to providing consumers with high-quality, locally grown products," said Grace Kanoy, president of the Davidson County Local Food Network. "The addition of the Coffee Park Airstream in Winston-Salem as a pick-up location further enhances accessibility for Winston-Salem residents. The partnership with Coffee Park Airstream demonstrates the community-minded spirit that drives our mission forward. By late June, we will be offering a pick-up location at the new Carolina Core Wellness building in High Point, and we hope we can add yet an additional pick-up location in Winston-Salem.” Piedmont Fresh has pick-up locations in Thomasville, Lexington, Winston-Salem and in June, High Point.
With the user-friendly Piedmont Fresh online platform, consumers have the convenience of placing orders from Saturday noon to Monday midnight. Farmers and bakers are promptly notified of the orders, enabling them to harvest or bake to order. The food hub staff efficiently packs the orders and ensures delivery on Thursdays to designated drop-off locations across the Piedmont. This streamlined process not only minimizes food waste but also guarantees that consumers receive the freshest and most nutritious produce, emphasizing the value of consuming locally harvested food soon after harvest.
In line with its mission to educate the public on agriculture and nutritious food, the Davidson County Local Food Network is excited to host the 4th Annual Davidson County Farm Tour on June 24th and 25th. This event offers attendees the chance to visit Piedmont Fresh farm vendors, engage with farmers, and gain a deeper understanding of the efforts involved in growing and producing food. Several vendors from Piedmont Fresh will be participating, providing a comprehensive farm-to-table education.
