Davidson County Public Library hosts plant swap and seed exchange
The Davidson County Public Library will host a plant and seed exchange/swap beginning in April 2024.
This program will provide a platform for community members to swap out indoor or outdoor potted plants, seedlings, as well as open-pollinated seeds, just in time for spring.
The exchange will occur on the second Monday of every month from 5:00 p.m until 6:00 p.m.
The first meeting will be at the Denton Public Library on April 8th, with the next scheduled at the North Davidson Public Library on May 13th. Additional dates will be announced via social media.
Sam Boring, Davidson County Horticulture Extension Agent and Coordinator for the Davidson County Master Gardener Association spoke at the Seed Conference at Denton Public Library on October 6, 2023. Boring encouraged everyone to save open-pollinated seeds, “Saving seeds is important for preserving our agricultural biodiversity. We used to have hundreds of varieties of common garden vegetables and now we only have a handful. Growing and saving seeds connects us to local history, biodiversity, and the source of our food.”
All seeds for exchange must fit the following criteria: open-pollinated and heirloom seeds (NOT GMO). Seeds for swapping must be contained in a coin envelope legibly marked (typed or written) with the type and variety of seed, the date collected, along with growing notes. These envelopes are available for purchase on Amazon, Walmart.com, or an office supply store.
To conduct the program, library staff will partner with Susan Scarboro, an Extension Master Gardener Volunteer of Davidson County. Scarboro is also a founding member of the Denton Public Library Seed Savers Exchange.
The Plant Swap/Seed Exchange is an example of the many engaging and relevant programs offered at the various Davidson County Public Library locations.
