Mar 24 Davidson County teacher honored with Civitan Award

The room was filled at a banquet in honor of Carissa Loflin, a teacher in Davidson County Schools.

The South Davidson Middle & South Davidson High School teacher was awarded the 2024 Nancy Sink Frazier Distinguished Teacher in Special Education Award at a banquet held March 19, 2024 at Center Church of Welcome.

The awards marked the 20th presentation of the award and was the tenth appreciation banquet. The featured speaker for the event was Perry Tuttle, a Midway native that now resides in Charlotte. Tuttle was a North Davidson High School star athlete, an All-American football player at Clemson University and a first round NFL draft pick by the Buffalo Bills. He is now an inspirational speaker, author and leadership coach working in sports marketing and sports ministry.

The namesake of the award is the late Mrs. Clarence Frazier, who retired at age 71 from Davidson-Davie Community College in May 2001 after teaching compensatory education for 26 years at The Workshop of Davidson, Inc.

Mrs. Frasier’s daughters, Becky Frasier and Marty Frazier Bontumasi were both in attendance for the award. Frazier was described by Kara Cody, Executive Director of The Workshop of Davidson, Inc., as “A wonderful dedicated teacher that always looked for the good and positive traits in her students.”

Loflin has been a teacher for sixteen years at Thomasville Primary School and at South Davidson School where she has taught in both the middle and high school levels.

In the nomination by Principal Chris Adams, he described Loflin as a “A superstar, having teaching skills second to none.” There were also letters from students, one stated, “Ms. Loflin is sweet, kind, caring and one the best teachers I have ever had.” Another student wrote, “I can always count on Mrs. Loflin for anything, she is always there when I need her.”

Davidson County Civitan Club President Teresa Shaw and mentor Beverly Proctor made the presentation to Loflin who was awarded with a plaque and a contribution for use by her school’s Exceptional Children’s program. There was also a perpetual plaque presented to be displayed for one year at Davidson County Schools listing all past recipients.

Other shining nominees for the award were Paula Fabros-Beauchat of Thomasville Primary School, Kelly Greene of Reeds Elementary School, Andrea Hix of Friedberg Elementary School, Jeremy Lovell of East Davidson High School, Jennifer Michael of North Davidson Middle School and Kim Scarboro of Denton Elementary School. Your hard work and dedication is also appreciated.

Civitan International was founded in 1917 with the mission of serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. The Distinguished Teacher Award honors all local educators that serve individuals with different abilities.
