Local non profit announces Youth Community Garden Initiative
Anything For Our Youth Group, Inc. is excited to announce the launch of our newest initiative, the Anything For Our Youth Group Community Garden. This community garden will provide an enriching opportunity for youth ages 5 and up to cultivate, nurture, and harvest fresh produce while learning essential gardening skills and gaining a deeper understanding of sustainable food practices.
Located at 104 E. Center Street in Lexington, NC, in the rear of First Reformed UCC directly behind Domino's Pizza on E. Center Street, the Community Garden, aims to serve socially marginalized youth in the Jamaica Drive (Terrace Lane), Pugh Street and 4th Street communities of Lexington, NC, comprising the Ward 5 section of the city. However, youth from other communities are warmly welcomed to join us and participate in the garden. All youth will begin working in the community garden on Monday, April 1, 2024, at 10:00 a.m and lunch will be provided. Each participant will receive a schedule of future garden days.
The Anything For Our Youth Group Community Garden is a collaborative effort between Anything For Our Youth Group, Inc., First Reformed UCC Lexington, NC, Black Butterfly Network - Lexington and NCSU Davidson County Cooperative Extension. Together, we aim to create a nurturing and educational environment where youth can engage in hands-on gardening activities and connect with nature.
Participants in the Community Garden will have the opportunity to plant various types of vegetables, herbs, fruits, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and more, under the guidance of our garden supervisor Xander Bostick, and other experienced gardeners and mentors. Registration is now open for youth interested in joining the program.
