DCS will revert schedule in the fall

On Monday evening, the Davidson County School Board of Education voted 4-1 to revert to the schedule utilized in the 2019-20 school year. At the meeting, Superintendent Dr. Emily Lipe reminded the board that restrictions for bus capacity at the beginning of the current school year caused the change in school start and end times to accommodate student transportation.

Other news included:

  • Public Health Strategist and Information Officer Janna Walker provided an update on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in Davidson County. Ms. Walker reported that while there was a slight uptick of positive test results in April, Davidson County remains stable. She did note that the number of citizens seeking vaccinations has slowed substantially.

  • Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Deana Coley requested board approval to purchase 58 Dell computers for CTE Computer Labs at Tyro Middle and South Davidson High School and the addition of Interactive Resource Centers at Central and South Davidson High Schools for 2021-2022. The devices will be purchased from Tiber Creek Consulting at a cost of $40,133.56 and will be paid using federal CTE funds. The board voted 5-0 to approve the purchase.

  • Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Deana Coley requested approval for purchase of Teacher Created Materials as reading intervention resources for use with students in grades 1-3 for Summer Learning Camp. The cost is $200,073.84 and will be paid using state Read to Achieve Summer Learning funds. The board voted 5-0 to approve the purchase.

  • Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Deana Coley requested approval for purchase of Teacher Created Materials as reading intervention resources for use with students in Kindergarten and grades 4-8, for Summer Learning Camp. The cost is $301,935.79 and will be paid using federal ESSER I (CARES Act) funds. The board voted 5-0 to approve the purchase.

  • Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Deana Coley requested approval for purchase of Scholastic, Inc. as reading intervention resources for use with students in grades 6-8 during Summer Learning Camp. The cost is $34,683.04 and will be paid using state Governors Emergency Education Relief (GEER) funds. The board voted 5-0 to approve the purchase.

  • Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Deana Coley requested approval for Brick ED to serve as the provider for elementary enrichment during Summer Learning Camp. The cost of the Brick ED program (staffing, travel, student materials, student take-home packs, etc.) is $100,900.00 and will be paid using federal ESSER I (CARES Act) funds. The board voted 5-0 to approve the purchase.

  • Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Lowell Rogers presented a contract extension request for Deer Oaks EAP Services, LLC to continue to serve as the Employee Assistant Program {EAP) provider for the 2021-2022 through 2022- 2023 fiscal years. These additional years will remain at the same guaranteed rate of $1.17 per employee per month as stated in the original three-year contract that will end on June 30, 2021. The board voted 5-0 to approve the request.

  • Chief Finance Officer Tyler Beck presented the proposed 2021-2022 Davidson County Schools Budget Resolution in compliance with N.C. General Statute 115C-425 and 115C 432. The board voted 5-0 to approve the budget.

  • The board voted 5-0 to approve Tony Smith to serve as interim principal of Davidson County High School beginning May 17 through the end of the school year.
