In a significant move towards sustainability and economic growth, Divert, Inc., a leader in circular economy solutions, has partnered with Nuveen Energy Infrastructure Credit, an affiliate of TIAA, to invest over $90 million in a state-of-the-art food waste processing facility in Lexington.

The forthcoming Integrated Diversion & Energy Facility is designed to process up to 100,000 tons of food waste annually. Utilizing advanced technologies, including anaerobic digestion, the facility will convert unsold food into renewable natural gas and nutrient-rich soil amendments. This approach not only addresses the pressing issue of food waste but also contributes to renewable energy production and soil health.

Ryan Begin, CEO and co-founder of Divert, emphasized the project's significance: "Our Lexington facility will address a critical need for food diversion and infrastructure in the Southeast U.S., while also turning unsold food products into new resources that allow us to recoup the value of that food."

The facility is part of Divert's ambitious plan to establish 30 such centers nationwide, aiming to position facilities within 100 miles of 80% of the U.S. population. In 2024 alone, Divert processed over 630 million pounds of unsold and non-donatable food, underscoring its commitment to reducing food waste on a national scale.

Local leaders have expressed strong support for the initiative. Lexington Mayor Jason Hayes remarked in a previous news release, "We are incredibly excited about Divert choosing Lexington to place its innovative approach to creating natural gas. This continues to support other sustainable manufacturing practices within our region. The most exciting part for us is Divert’s investment in Lexington and job creation."

The collaboration between Divert and Nuveen exemplifies a strategic effort to address environmental challenges while fostering economic development. Don Dimitrievich, Head of Nuveen Energy Infrastructure Credit, stated, "Divert’s impressive growth and proven record of operational excellence are aligned with Nuveen’s commitment to investing in businesses that solve major societal challenges, such as food waste, while also addressing growing energy demand."

As the facility becomes operational, Lexington is poised to become a model for sustainable practices, showcasing how innovative infrastructure can effectively tackle food waste, generate renewable energy and stimulate local economies.
