On Thursday, August 25, Davidson Local traveled to Raleigh for the 149thAnnual North Carolina Press Association Convention and Awards Banquet. It was our first time at the event!
We enjoyed sessions with North Carolina Treasurer Dale Falwell who shared information about unclaimed cash and some issues a few cities, towns and districts were facing across the state. During lunch, participants were treated to a presentation by Tom Silvestri of The Relevance Project. He encouraged all publications to host at least one community forum regarding a topic that is impacting our service area.
In the afternoon session, representatives from Stevens Martin Vaughn & Tadych PLLC informed those in attendance about the latest developments regarding open meetings, access and transparency. Cases from around the state were highlighted.
The awards banquet was held in the evening. We won two awards! Sidney Briggs won second place in the serious columns division for her column about COVID-19. Former writer and photographer James Kiefer was awarded second place in sports photography for the pictures he took during the delay of the Lexington vs. Thomasville football game last April.
