Easter event for kids to be held Saturday

On Saturday, April 3, Anything for Our Youth (AFOY), will be hosting a reimagined “Thump the Yard ‘Egg’stravaganza” from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. The event will take place at 250 Fairview Dr. 

Nine years ago, AFOY began hosting a yearly Easter egg hunt. During the event, there were also other activities for the children. 

“In 2012, me and a group of friends wanted to have a community wide Easter egg hunt for the kids which we organized and put together,” said Tina Royal, AFOY’s executive director. “The first one was a huge success, and it was done at Finch Park in Lexington.” 

This led to more events and bigger crowds. 

“The mission was to continue to put on events where kids can be a kid,” stated Royal “We wanted to provide programs and events for the youth in our community by creating entertainment, promoting education and physical activities.”  

This year, due to COVID-19, interaction has been a struggle for children. Many haven’t been able to participate in extra activities because of organizations and businesses not wanting to risk exposure. 

Books that AFOY has collected will be given out along with premade Easter bags.

This year’s “Thump the Yard ‘Egg’stravaganza” will be a drive-thru event. Children will receive premade bags and baskets along with a free book. Volunteers, along with the Easter Bunny, will distribute items. The Lexington Fire Department will be partnering with the local organization to make sure traffic is being directed in a safe manner.
