A City of Lexington Parks and Recreation favorite is returning for spring. On Saturday, April 10 from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m., the department will host Go Fly A Kite Day in Uptown Lexington. The event will take place in the large, grass lot between E. 2nd and 3rd Aves. It’s sponsored by Local Government Federal Credit Union.
Last year, at this time, as the country was still figuring out life in a pandemic, the new tradition was one of the first events to suffer cancellation. Laura Duran, Parks and Recreation Director, is thrilled the day of fun is back on the calendar this year.
“As we ease out of pandemic restrictions, we are excited to be able to move forward with Go Fly a Kite Day 2021,” said Duran. “We hope that people come out to decorate and fly a kite, while continuing to maintain social distance- which is perfect for kite flying!”
The first 60 attendees will receive a free kite to decorate and fly. Participants may also bring their own kites. Along with “taking to the skies” to see how high or low you can get your kite to fly there will also be contests, music and more. Once the event is over, those in attendance are encouraged to take a stroll through Uptown Lexington to visit shops and restaurants.
While kite flying may sound like it’s something only young children participate in, Duran assures Go Fly A Kite Day is welcoming to children of all ages.
“A lot of people think of this event as being only for kids- but we encourage adults to come out also,” she said. “Flying a kite gives you the feeling of achievement when you get the kite up in the air and excitement of guiding it as it soars and dips in the wind. You feel like a kid again!”
