Joel's Job Tips #9 and #10
Clarify Your Career Goals
Not sure what you want to do with your career? Sometimes it’s easier to identify what you don't want versus what you do.
Make a list of job characteristics that you don't want. Perhaps you don't like to speak before audiences, Perhaps you don't like to work inside. Perhaps you don't like working in a large company. Perhaps you don't like to do the same monotonous tasks everyday.
Write down as detailed a list as possible then share with people you admire and can trust to give you constructive feedback to get their suggestions on pathways forward. Building a team of trusted advisors can help you learn what you need to know to grow.
At your funeral, what would you like people to say about your contribution to society? As best selling author Stephen Covey said, ‘“Begin with the end in mind.” Then give work a chance to make your dreams come true!
Have faith in your work to create positive outcomes.
The absence of information causes us all to assume negative presumptions. Whenever we don't hear from our family members, our minds try to protect us by presuming the worst possible outcomes.
In the job market, we can't let our negative presumptions control our actions. While it is good to be concerned, we all must have faith in our work that positive outcomes will occur if we work hard, stay focused and persevere onward and upward.
What is amazing is that if you earnestly strive for good outcomes, many times the world conspires to help you. Keep the faith and put your heart into your work!
