Women's History Month: Service organization provides essential items for middle school girls

The ladies of the Omicron Psi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Incorporated recently visited three local schools to make a special delivery. Thomasville, Lexington and South Davidson Middle Schools all received ‘Pretty Packs’ from the organization.
So, what are ‘Pretty Packs?’ They’re small bags filled with hygiene products for girls. The idea came to fruition as a result of conversations members of the sorority had regarding ways they could support school besides a traditional back to school supply drive.
“Having several chapter members who work in schools, we discussed needs that we could work to meet,” said Krystal Craven-Sanders, chief human resources officer for Thomasville City Schools. “Most schools are provided basic feminine hygiene products from local hospitals or health departments. Although appreciated, these items are not usually ones that are specifically made for young ladies.”

The AKAs consulted with school officials to determine which schools would be recipients based on free and reduced lunch numbers. In August, the sorority held a donation drive where they collected over 3600 items. As a result, they were able to create 108 ‘Pretty Packs. The selected schools received 36 each.
When asked how having these items readily available can affect a student and their classroom performance, Craven-Sanders stated, “At this age, these young ladies are often unprepared and do not have the hygiene items on hand when the need arises at school. The young ladies are often embarrassed to ask for help, only adding to the feelings of uncertainty that are related to this major life change. These pretty packs allow young ladies to go to the designated area in their school, discreetly take a Pretty Pack with all items they need-hygiene items as well as positive affirmations from chapter members.”
Going forward, the organization has established relationships with the schools in hopes of providing additional items in the future. They’re also discussing replicating this project at other schools.
