Meet our new intern: Katelynn Suon
Meet our intern, Katelynn Suon. She’s a rising senior from LSHS. This summer Davidson Local will host 3 new interns from Davidson County and Lexington City Schools. We hope readers will welcome them by sharing their stories.
My name is Katelynn Suon. I was born and raised here in North Carolina. I am going to be a senior at LSHS and I plan on going to DDCC to become an esthetician. This will be my first internship, and I am quite thankful to have been given this opportunity. I look forward to learning and gaining new experiences from this summer internship.
As a rising senior, I have gathered various experiences and interests from LSHS. Interior design, marketing, dance and construction were some of my most enjoyable electives. All of those classes gave me the opportunity to explore my artistic skills and learn more about my passions. I enjoy making school presentations because it allows me to be creative while still helping people comprehend the subject. I’m also a founding member of the Random Acts of Kindness club. We've already accomplished a lot so far, including organizing and hosting a trunk-or-treat event for the community and a Valentine’s Day fundraiser where we sold adorable bracelets to generate money for our club.
Listening to music, eating food, and spending quality time with family and friends are some of my favorite passions. K-pop and KRNB are two of my favorite music genres. I became interested in K-pop around 2017, therefore I was extremely excited to attend my first K-pop concert in Charlotte, and it was definitely worth it. I’ve only been to two concerts so far, but I look forward to seeing more. I love how music draws people together, creating beautiful connections and memories that last a lifetime, which is why I adore it. I enjoy eating food, but Cambodian food in particular because that is the cuisine I grew up eating. I feel a strong connection with my culture when it comes to food. I would say I’m very family-oriented.
Although I am Cambodian and Laotian, I relate more with my Cambodian heritage. My grandparents had endured numerous hardships before coming to America as a result of the Khmer Rouge, and I was taught about their experience they had to go through during those difficult times. Adapting to American society was challenging for them but they managed to get back on their feet and rise above the difficulties no matter how hard it was, which is why I work hard for my family. April is one of my favorite months because we celebrate TLC New Year and there are celebrations at the Cambodian Cultural Center here in Lexington. It’s a two day festival that includes traditional dances, food, music, and other fun activities that brings the community together.
I hope to gain more knowledge about the community and become comfortable with the work environment. I’m pretty new to this, but I am ready to put everything I’ve got into this internship. Having the opportunity to explore other professional paths will help me determine what to pursue in the future. I’m very excited and look forward to seeing how everything goes while I’m doing this internship. I’m ready to learn and gain real-life experiences.
