Lab results confirm another rabies case
The Davidson County Health Department received lab results on April 11, confirming the 4th positive rabies case in the county this year. Late last week in the Hedrick Grove area, near US Highway 64 E, a skunk accessed an outdoor dog pen and bit the two domestic dogs that were in the enclosure. The owner of the dogs was able to terminate the skunk. As a result of the bites, both dogs, who were current on their rabies vaccinations, have been boosted for rabies and are under a 45-day quarantine. The owner of the dogs has also been referred for medical care and has begun post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
Wildlife, including skunks, foxes, and racoons, are most active this time of year. If you are a pet owner, it is crucial that you keep your domestic pets up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. In the event your pet comes in contact with a wild animal, contact your veterinarian immediately, a rabies booster may be necessary. If you see stray animals or wildlife in your neighborhood, contact Animal Control at 336- 242-0131.
Humans must also proceed with caution. Never touch a dead wild animal with your bare hands. Rabies in 99.9% fatal in humans without PEP. If you have questions regarding your own exposure to any animal, please contact your healthcare provider to discuss your situation.
