LCS State of our Schools
We here at Lexington City Schools (LCS), North Carolina are excited to update the community on the progress of student performance, substitute recruitment and our athletic complex renovations. As reported at our February 1st Board of Education (BOE) meeting, we have several highlights regarding increased student performance, in addition to select areas that’ll require continued intentional focus:
Elementary Schools
Our teachers and scholars are working diligently to close gaps that have been created by a loss of face-to-face instruction, during the 2020-2021 school year.
Elementary reading and math are progressing as measured by state check-ins (assessments).
Science continues to be an area of above average performance.
Middle School
Our second middle school reading check-in has improved since the first check-in.
Although our math performance does not meet our expectations, we are still striving to fill in learning gaps and push students toward growth measures.
Middle school Science continues to be a highlight.
Senior High School
At the end of the first semester, high school student performance in our tested areas exceeded our expectations.
We improved student proficiency in 3 of the 4 areas.
We anticipate that English II performance for the second semester will be on par with the high performance of 2020-2021.
The substitute shortage continues to be an area of focus. The LCS Board of Education is committed to improving the number of substitutes and minimizing additional class coverage for teachers. The BOE has increased substitute pay by $25 a day and will be hiring (with benefits) one full-time permanent substitute through May, 2022 for each of our schools. Substitutes are a vital part of the instructional programs in our schools and provide classroom oversight when teachers have to be out of the building.
Renovations to our football field and track at Lexington Senior High School are moving full speed ahead. The pre-bid meeting for all interested bidders was held on Tuesday, February 1st and all bids will be opened publicly on February 10th. The renovations include new storm drainage, resurfaced track and a turf field. The project is expected to be completed by the end of July; just in time for the 2022-2023 football season.
LCS continues to solicit volunteers in the district to serve as lunchroom monitors, bus monitors, mentors, and hall monitors. If you or your organization would like to support LCS as a volunteer, please reach out to Dr. Kasey Wilkie, Community Engagement Coordinator, at kwilkie@lexcs.org or our Human Resources Assistant, Ramelle Shuler at rshuler@lexcs.org.
