Lexington City Schools Celebrates the Arts: Empowering Students Through Creativity

At Lexington City Schools (LCS), we are dedicated to providing our students with a well-rounded, innovative education that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Our commitment to the arts is at the heart of this effort, as we offer students access to a diverse array of artistic disciplines from Pre-K through 12th grade.

Elementary Schools: Sparking Creativity Early
At the elementary level, students are introduced to the arts through a wide range of activities that ignite their imaginations and build foundational skills in music, visual arts, and movement. Research by the International Child Art Foundation shows that children exposed to the arts develop critical abilities in creative thinking, innovation, and intellectual discovery—skills that are essential for success in the 21st century.

In our innovative music program, young learners explore their voices, body percussion, instruments, and dance, creating a strong foundation for musical development. Visual arts students are introduced to the principles of design, color theory, and various artistic mediums, allowing them to experiment and express themselves in new ways. These early experiences in the arts lay the groundwork for personal growth, social connection, and academic success.

Middle School: Cultivating Passion and Skill
At Lexington Middle School (LMS), the arts programs continue to nurture students' talents while emphasizing personal responsibility, discipline, and teamwork. Our band program aligns with North Carolina music standards, focusing on skills such as aural training, music reading, and ensemble performance. Students develop their abilities through practice and dedication, learning that hard work is key to achieving greatness in any field.

The visual arts program at LMS encourages students to explore a variety of techniques, including drawing, painting, and digital art. Students keep portfolios and sketchbooks to document their progress and engage in discussions about their creative process. This program exposes students to a broad range of artistic movements and artists, allowing them to appreciate diverse perspectives.

Additionally, LMS offers African Drumming and Chorus programs that provide students with opportunities to develop rhythmic skills, enhance their self-esteem, and build unity through group performance. Students in the Chorus program grow their musical talents while gaining a deeper appreciation for culture and community.

High School: Advanced Arts Opportunities and Global Connections
At Lexington Senior High School (LSHS), students can take their artistic talents to new heights in a variety of disciplines, including visual arts, band, dance, and chorus. The visual arts program encourages students to use their work to challenge perspectives and provoke thought, helping them develop their unique voice as artists. Students explore photography, painting, sculpture, and more, with the opportunity to showcase their work in galleries and exhibitions.

The LSHS band program provides students with a comprehensive music education, from Beginning Band to Jazz Band and Marching Band. The program focuses on developing well-rounded musicians who are prepared for college and beyond, with opportunities for students to earn music-based scholarships. The band also performs at various events and plays a key role in building school spirit and pride.

LSHS students also benefit from a strong, culturally rich chorus program. The Concert Choir and Choral Ensemble provide opportunities for students to perform at local, national, and international venues. The Choral Ensemble, an advanced group, has consistently earned superior ratings at state and national competitions and has performed at prestigious locations such as the White House, Carnegie Hall, and international venues in Canada, Italy, Greece, and France. These experiences allow students to connect with peers from around the world while honing their vocal skills.

The dance program at LSHS teaches students the fundamentals of movement, with a focus on the five key elements of dance: Body, Action, Space, Time, and Energy (BASTE). Students explore various genres, including modern dance, ballet, and cultural dances, providing them with the tools to express emotions and ideas through movement.

Arts as a Pathway to Personal and Academic Growth
At Lexington City Schools, the arts are more than just extracurricular activities—they are an integral part of our students' academic journeys and personal development. Participation in the arts helps students build confidence, think critically, and work collaboratively. It also provides them with the skills and mindset necessary for success in any career they choose to pursue.

Through the arts, students learn to appreciate diverse cultures, express their unique identities, and solve problems creatively. We are proud to offer such a wide range of artistic opportunities that help our students grow as individuals, artists, and citizens.

Join Us in Celebrating the Arts
As we continue to support and expand our arts programs, we invite the community to celebrate the incredible talent and creativity of our students. From elementary through high school, LCS students are making their mark in the arts, and we are excited to see how their artistic journey continues to unfold.
