Health: Local doctors say certain cancers are preventable
A recent study reports half of all cancer deaths globally are attributable to preventable risk factors.
Cancer is currently the second leading cause of death worldwide. While this is a frightening statistic, the good news is that according to a recent study, the risk for certain types of cancer can be lowered through a few simple lifestyle choices. Local Novant Health oncologists discuss tips on lowering your risk from this developing this disease.

The international study points to primary prevention and ensuring effective capacity to diagnose and treat those with cancer.
Dr. Josiah An, an oncologist with Novant Health Cancer Institute in Thomasville summarized by offering that people can avoid certain cancers with simple lifestyle choices.
An said, “Lifestyle choices are linked to the development of cancer. Tobacco use is associated with the development of lung cancer, among other cancers. Alcohol use is associated with esophageal, colorectal, and liver cancer. Dietary habit is connected with colorectal cancer. In addition, a high body mass index is associated with the development of multiple cancers.”
Dr. An also noted American Cancer Society recommends avoiding tobacco use, eating less meat and incorporating more plant-based food in the diet, avoiding excess weight, and adopting a physically active lifestyle to reduce cancer risk.
