Davidson County: 2022 Digital Counties Award for Information Technology
Davidson County has been named by the Center for Digital Government as one of the Top 10 Digital Counties Survey Awards winners, among counties across the nation with a population between 150,000 and 249,999 people. Davidson County placed 5th in its population group and was one of only eight North Carolina counties named across all population groups from the US.
The Center for Digital Government (CDG) and the National Association of Counties (NACo) have announced the 2018 Digital Counties Survey winners. The survey, conducted by CDG in partnership with NACo, identifies the best technology practices among U.S. counties, including initiatives that save tax dollars through newfound efficiencies; boost transparency, cybersecurity and engagement; or innovate through unique and exciting projects.
“Innovative counties are utilizing technology and data to better inform and protect themselves and their citizens, to save taxpayer money and to provide a better citizen experience,” said Teri Takai, executive director, CDG. “The Center for Digital Government congratulates this year’s winners for all the efforts they are making to improve the lives of their residents and others.”
“Effective technology has proven to be a key tool for efficiency in many facets of county government,” said NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase. “We applaud this year’s Digital Counties Survey winners for showcasing the value of innovation and adaptation. Their embrace of cutting-edge approaches has benefited residents while ensuring good stewardship of taxpayer resources.”
Davidson County has been a leader in performance based budgeting for more than 15 years. By focusing on outcomes and evaluating programs by measuring the relationship between resources and results, the county has saved over $29 million during that time period. A key driver in performance budgeting has been technology. For example, Davidson County has invested in document management software for its human resources department that has eliminated inefficient paper management while freeing up valuable space once occupied by filing cabinets.
The county released its new website with many new features such as NotifyMe, Financial Dashboard & Citizen Request on Litter. The use of drones in Emergency Services to aid in fire investigations and other dangerous scenes is beneficial to aid rescue and recovery efforts. Davidson County Board of Commissioner Meetings are now videoed and live streamed on the county Youtube channel. The meeting videos are archived and available from the county website as well as connected to the Board meeting agendas & minutes website. The county cybersecurity awareness training program will kick off its 4th year of training to educate county employees on the different security threats that could be encountered and proper defense mechanism.
