Gardeners and garden enthusiasts from across the state are strolling through historic neighborhoods in Lexington for a highly anticipated tour. After a two-year hiatus, the blooming event returned on June 4th and Sunday, June 5th. Homeowners featured on the path were pleasantly surprised by groups waiting for the openings. More than 500 are expected to visit nine homes throughout the weekend.

This makes Davidson County Extension Master Gardener’s 16th Garden Tour. Davidson County Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Mike Niver applauded the participants, noting that most are not certified as Master Gardeners. “They have inspirational gardens. It is wonderful for them to allow us to come... It’s been like a homecoming,” Niver said. He served as a guide at the home of Marcia Michaud-Patterson and Don Patterson as they greeted a hometown friend from Raliegh.

The tour takes place in the Historic West Second Avenue, Westover and Grimes Park areas of Lexington. The return has been publicized through state-wide Master Gardeners’ websites. “Nine gardens have been preserved, restored and re-invented in a variety of styles and sizes,” according to group. Visitors are invited to walk from garden to garden through Grimes Park or you can park and visit in groups.  While you’re strolling through the host gardens, Davidson County Master Gardener volunteers are available to answer your questions.

Tickets are still on sale for $20 at Breeden Insurance, 312 West Center Street and the entrance to Grimes Park, 25 Hege Drive.  The tickets include a tote bag with detailed information about each garden, map, pen and garden details.

The event is hosted by Davidson County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association (DCEMGVA). Expect greetings from a friendly volunteer group that you’ll see around the county making improvements to public spaces, including a project now being completed at the Arcadia Community Center.
