Vickie Grant and Linda McKay were recently presented the Servant’s Heart
Award by Civitan International. The award honors exemplary leadership,
dedication and outstanding service in the field of intellectual or developmentally
different abilities.
Grant retired from Davidson County Schools after a career serving special
students in an administrative role for most of 25 years.
Grant currently serves on the Special Olympics Davidson County Committee.
She has been a valued liaison between the Exceptional Children’s Department and
Special Olympics.
McKay has dedicated their life to serving people in special education. She retired
after teaching with Davidson County Schools then worked with Randolph County
Schools before finishing with Thomasville City Schools.
McKay has been an active member, director and mentor of the Davidson County
Civitan Club for nearly 20 years. She also serves on the local committee for
Special Olympics Davidson County and founded the cheerleading team many
years ago.
At Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, McKay works with a special needs
program that hosts monthly events.
Civitan International’s clubs across the world take part in the Servant’s Heart
Awards. This global awareness project honors people who support individuals
with intellectual and developmentally different abilities. They may be professionals or volunteers and may include teachers, teacher assistants, paraprofessionals and therapists. Civitan International has ties to the creation of special education programs across the United States since the early 1950’s.
Chuck Bowman of Rockwell, and member of the Civitan International Board of
Directors, presented the Servant’s Heart Awards. The local Civitan Clubs of
Davidson County, Silver Valley, Thomasville and Welcome chose the recipients.
