The announcement was made today at the Davidson County campus of Davidson-Davie Community College. Nucor Corporation will be coming to Lexington/Davidson County. The Charlotte-based Nucor confirmed in December, it was looking in six Southeast states for a location for its third mill dedicated to producing rebar, which is used to reinforce concrete in the construction of roads, buildings, bridges and other structures. The company looked at sites in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, as well as North Carolina.

Mike Hess will be the general manager of the Lexington mill. He is a Nucor veteran and has previously held that position at Nucor Steel Jackson in Mississippi and Nucor Steel Marion in Ohio.

Special presentations were given during the announcement at the Rittling Conference Center at Davidson-Davie Community College.

Holly Grove Fire Department who will serve as the department closest to the new mill received a check for $50,000 as a gift from Nucor. Lexington City Schools, Thomasville City, and Davidson County Schools received a gift of $250,000 each for educational support. An additional check for $100,000 was given for a food pantry for Davidson County Schools. This was especially noted for all the hard work educators put in during the COVID-19 pandemic.
