Opinion Column: Liz de Toro Let’s get back to the ABCs and 123s of Academics
As I was being interviewed to renew my position in one of the educational boards, one of the questions I was asked was what I would change within our schools. Differently to the way I answered quickly to all the other questions, I stopped and asked for a second to go through my words, not because of the difficulty of the question, but because I knew they probably wouldn’t like my answer.
I was born in the 70s decades ago, the world I was raised in looked very different than now. You know how you grow up thinking about how your world as a kid would get better? This is not what I imagined growing up for our nation. There was a time when we could go outside to play with kids and the amount of Autism, A D D or A D H D were few and far in between, in some cases unknown to us. There was no such thing as a mental health treatment in schools, and parents had the ultimate power concerning your education. Going to college was about getting you out of debt with a well-paying job, not getting you into debt in which you went to school only to wind up working in a low paying job because of the lack of experience in the field you took. You went to school not to get your belief system or your moral value system from or to learn what the color of your skin meant, you went to school for your ABCs and 123s, period. What happened? How have we allowed our schools to get hijacked?
Today the amount of drug use, suicide rates and mental health issues in children runs ramped due to the increasing number of parents divorced, with financial strain, having to work all kinds of hours and jobs just to make ends meet. The culture now redefining traditional marriage with a new trend of genders.
The schools have become the “Nanny’s” and the educational system is planned by politicians and not the Educators as it should be. People that have no clue about Pedagogy are making the curriculums of this nation, infusing their agendas (whether right or left) into our children’s minds. So, I was determined to give an answer in this interview to be able to incorporate all that without showing how upset I am about it.
My answer was “If I had my way I would get back to the ABCs and 123s, and how far the moon was from the sun. I would stop teaching things that parents should be the ones to teach in each home. The school should be neutral concerning these matters. We have no business telling children how to feel biologically, not to mention not allowing parents to decide what’s convenient for their children to learn.
We need to incorporate more technical and vocational schooling because not every child is going to go to college, that’s a fact. I would love to see an increase in STEM skills. So, what are we offering them? I believe that just because you don’t go to college doesn’t make you less than. My two older sons graduated college, one a tech, the other an engineer, but my daughter decided to work. They are all successful and are happy in path that they have chosen and that’s alright with me. The CTE classes should bring in more of a variety instead of the same pathways and this should start as of the 7 th grade, not just 10th grade. This is what we should be using the funding for, and this is what I would change.”
If we cannot turn back the clock, we can at least do things to help our students thrive and be better people. We can redo our mistakes and come back to the drawing board of our innovations to teach for them to learn. There is a lot of teaching going on now a day that has nothing to do with academics but victimization. Divide and conquer will always be the tactic of the people that want to keep you divided and controlled so you’re too entertained to see what is really going on.
This is still the United States of America and unless we move forward to correct what’s happening as parents, grandparents and citizens, by the time we are old, there will no longer be a country known as “The Land of the FREE and BRAVE” for them to live in.

Volvamos Hacia los Conceptos Básicos en las Escuelas
Mientras me entrevistaban para renovar mi puesto en una de las juntas educativas, una de las preguntas
que me hicieron fue qué cambiaría dentro de nuestras escuelas. A diferencia de la forma en que
respondí rápidamente a todas las demás preguntas, me detuve y pedí un segundo para revisar mis
palabras, no por la dificultad de la pregunta, sino porque sabía que probablemente no les gustaría mi
respuesta.
Nací en los años 70 hacen décadas ya, ese mundo en el que me crie se veía muy diferente al de ahora.
¿Sabes cómo creces pensando en cómo mejoraría tu mundo en el futuro cuando eras niño? Esto no es lo
que imaginé para nuestra nación. Hubo un tiempo en que podíamos salir a jugar con los niños y la
cantidad de autismo, déficit de atención u hiperactividad eran pocos y distantes entre sí, en algunos
casos desconocidos para nosotros. No existía tal cosa como el tratamiento de salud mental en las
escuelas, y los padres tenían el poder supremo con respecto a la educación de sus hijos. Ir a la
universidad se trataba de sacarte de la deuda con un trabajo bien pagado, no de endeudarte en el que
fuiste a la escuela solo para terminar trabajando en un trabajo mal pagado debido a la falta de
experiencia en el campo que tomaste. Fuiste a la escuela, no para obtener tu sistema de creencias o tu
sistema de valores morales o para aprender lo que significaba el color de tu piel, fuiste a la escuela para
tus ABC y 123, punto. ¿Qué sucedió? ¿Cómo hemos permitido que nuestras escuelas sean secuestradas?
Hoy en día, la cantidad de consumo de drogas, las tasas de suicidio y los problemas de salud mental en
los niños aumentan debido al creciente número de padres divorciados, con problemas financieros, que
tienen que trabajar todo tipo de horas y trabajos solo para sobrevivir. La cultura ahora redefine el
matrimonio tradicional con una nueva tendencia de géneros. Las escuelas se han convertido en las
“Nanny’s” y el sistema educativo lo planifican los políticos y no los educadores como debe ser. Las
personas que no tienen ni idea de Pedagogía están creando los planes de estudios de esta nación,
infundiendo sus agendas (ya sea rojo o azul) en las mentes de nuestros niños. Entonces, estaba decidido
a dar una respuesta en esta entrevista para poder incorporar todo eso sin mostrar lo molesto que estoy
por eso.
Mi respuesta fue: “Si me saliera con la mía, volvería al ABC y al 123, y qué tan lejos estaba la luna del sol.
Dejaría de enseñar cosas que deben ser los padres los que enseñen en cada hogar. La escuela debe ser
neutral con respecto a estos asuntos. No tenemos por qué decirles a los niños cómo se sienten
biológicamente, por no hablar de no permitir que los padres decidan lo que es conveniente que sus hijos
aprendan. Necesitamos incorporar más educación técnica y vocacional porque no todos los niños van a
ir a la universidad, eso es un hecho. Me encantaría ver un aumento en las habilidades de ciencias,
tecnología, ingeniería, y matemáticas. Entonces, ¿qué les estamos ofreciendo? Creo que el hecho de que
no vayas a la universidad no te hace menos que. Mis dos hijos mayores se graduaron de la universidad,
uno técnico y el otro ingeniero, pero mi hija decidió trabajar. Todos tienen éxito y están felices en el
camino que han elegido y eso está bien para mí. Las clases de CTE deberían traer más variedad en lugar
de las mismas vías y esto debería comenzar a partir del séptimo grado, no solo del décimo grado. Esto es
para lo que deberíamos usar los fondos, y esto es lo que cambiaría”.
Si no podemos hacer retroceder el reloj, al menos podemos hacer cosas para ayudar a nuestros
estudiantes a prosperar y ser mejores personas. Podemos rehacer nuestros errores y volver al tablero
de dibujo de nuestras innovaciones para enseñarles a aprender. Hay muchas enseñanzas que no tiene
nada que ver con lo académico sino con la victimización. La actitud de dividir y controlar siempre será la
táctica de las personas que quieren mantenerte dividido y controlado para que estés demasiado

entretenido para no poder ver lo que realmente está pasando. Esto sigue siendo los Estados Unidos de
América y, a menos que avancemos para corregir lo que está sucediendo como padres, abuelos y
ciudadanos, cuando seamos viejos, ya no habrá un país conocido como "La Tierra de los LIBRES y
VALIENTES" para ellos vivir exitosos.
