Thomasville honors “unchained” history

The Thomasville Black History Month committee is set to host a program in celebration of African Americans’ history, contributions and culture. According to city councilor and organizer Wendy Sellars, there will be a display of citizens and their contributions to the Thomasville and Davidson County communities.

The public is invited to a celebratory event, to include the film, “Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives.” This 2003 documentary film features formerly enslaved persons interviewed during the 1930s as part of the Federal Writers' Project and preserved in the WPA Slave Narrative Collection.

Sellars said, “It is important to go back and remember and celebrate our ancestors and all they sacrificed to allow us to be where we are today. The Slave Narratives is a powerful way for us to hear the words and feel the experiences of actual slaves.”

The film viewing will be followed by a Friday speech from the Honorable Judge Rosalind Baker. Baker made history as the first African American judge in Davidson County.
